Paul Rand, Ordination, Helvetica and Punk’n Beer

It’s always interesting who you run into in the most random circumstances. Just last night a friend and I drove to Charlotte to celebrate the ordination of one of her old friends. After about five smoke breaks and a lot of sitting and standing the service was finally over and we headed to the family’s house to talk in a less formal environment. Mind you, I don’t know any of these people, I was more or less there for the ride.
Arranging a Self Portrait

Remarkably, this photo says almost everything about me through:
Art that I've collected from Peru, Italy and Spain (some behind Rudi) My favorite Renaissance painting by Raphael, The School of Athens (which could almost be a self-portrait in itself)
My boy Rudi My first boy, King

Close to a year ago I had access to a laser etcher on the campus of Virginia Tech. Before that year I had never used one; and for that matter, I had never heard of using one for art. Once I realized how versatile the laser etcher was, I etched damn near everything I had (iPhone, writing portfolio, external hard drives, my MacBook Pro, etc…).
Photomerge in Adobe Bridge CS4

Everyone has seen those awesome multi-freeze frame photos of athletes doing their high-speed moves like this one of Dave Watson. Dave pulled off a stunt during the Tour de France, in the Alp d'Huez stage. He waited for the peloton to round the corner in the mountains and proceeded to literally jump over them. The good news is that he wasn’t arrested and thrown into jail. The bad news is that he didn’t land it.
I’ve always thought that the process to make a photo like this was long and arduous, requiring a film camera exposing multiple times on the same frame. But if that were the case, wouldn’t the photo turn out overexposed? The guys at Adobe answer the question. In Adobe Bridge CS4 there is an option called “Photomerge” that makes the process of creating an amazing action photo easy as buying tainted meat from McDonalds.

I am a web designer and I find myself immersed in the internet far too much. There’s Twitter, Facebook, my own blog, portfolio, all of the various online magazines I check out, etc, but of the whole year, I would have to put the most weight on the human connections that I’ve had. Time to sit with friends and smoke cigarettes in the house until 3am talking about the depths of life, being there for a friend in need, crying with someone you care about, laughing until your sides hurt, and so many other things are my treasures of 2009.

We have everything we need to stay connected - to clients, employers, friends, and just yourself - and it fits in our pocket. I recently started using my iPhone for more than just an iPod, address book and camera... if this sounds like your habits, keep reading.

I say Steez Promo. This is the fourth Massive I've been to in Baltimore and the fifth large event put on by Steez (Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, Starscape) and this is the fourth event with serious issues. In the Summer, Joe Nice didn't have equipment that worked so we sat in silence while one random kid was chanting his name. This turned his set from an hour and a half to about 3o minutes. Spring Massive SHUT DOWN the stage Joe Nice was on after about 30 minutes, Starscape was a complete incoherent and convoluted mess where the artists were too wasted to play, children were in strollers were allowed in, sitting next to many people doing many things not suited for a child, and now the most recent event, Fall Massive. Supposed to end at 6am, it was shut down officially at 2am by the fire marshall - for overselling the venue by 1,000 people - and this was after the partygoers were waiting in line for hours. I was in line from 9 until 11.

Recently there's been a Bank of America commercial pushing their mobile app. There's a woman using her iPhone outside of a corporate building, it show's her accounts, how easy it is to use the interface, etc. But the peculiar thing is that there are two actors, a woman that is immediately on the left of the screen at the start and a man, midway through on the right - and their faces are subtly blurred out.
